Dredging and underwater excavation

Dredging and underwater excavation

Professional underwater excavation and dredging

Dredging is underground excavation intended to modify the depth of the sea, lake or other water body. In addition to small shore locations, dredging can also be used in large harbour areas and waterways. Dredging can be done from the shore, using floats on the water or on ice. Contaminated bottom sediments can be removed sustainably from the waterways using suction dredging or a closed bucket, preventing the spreading of contaminated soil back to the water bodies.

Areas of application:
• Remediation of shores and water bodies
• Deepening, construction and maintenance of waterways
• Harbours and marinas
• Beaches and recreational areas

Choosing a dredging method suitable for the project guarantees that the dredging does not cause any harm to the environment. YIT has access to a versatile equipment allowing dredging in many kinds of conditions. All YIT units are fitted with GPS and a software allowing us to ensure the desired depth and accuracy of excavation.

Underwater blasting is used to reduce the rock level height in a sea, lake or other water body. Explosives suitable for underwater blasting are used, placing them in holes drilled in the rock. The holes are drilled from the raft or using divers. In shallow areas, drilling can be done using machines placed on the shore. The blasted rock is excavated out and can be utilised in other construction. Underwater blasting is usually performed in connection with dredging. A GPS-based software is used in both blasting and dredging, allowing the precise determination of the ground shape before and after the blasting. Careful design of blasting work and the GPS software allow us to ensure that the excavation is done precisely to the desired level.

Areas of application:
• Remediation of shores and water bodies
• Deepening, construction and maintenance of waterways
• Harbours and marinas
• Foundations of beacons
