Kamppi Health and Well-being Centre, Helsinki

We are constructing a new Kamppi health and well-being centre in the heart of Helsinki that will provide the residents of the city centre with accessible, diverse and modern public social welfare and health care services.

We are delivering the centre to the City of Helsinki to serve the southern parts of the city. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2027, and the premises will be taken into use in 2028. The project is being implemented as a cooperative project management contract. The implementation phase began at the start of 2024. In October 2024, the City of Helsinki awarded the Real Estate Award to the Kamppi health and well-being centre in the 2024 Roadwork Site of the Year competition.

The new building is located in Kamppi on a street and square block bordered by Runeberginkatu, Fredrikinkatu, Kampinkuja, and Salomonkatu – more precisely, on the site of the former ticket hall building of the western entrance to Kamppi metro station, between Sähkötalo and Autotalo. The property will include two underground and eight above-ground floors.

The project will enable easily accessible, diverse, and modern public social and health care services for approximately 140,000 users in the southern parts of Helsinki.

In addition to health services, the property will include commercial premises, metro station spaces, and connections to the metro and Kamppi Centre. The metro station entrance facilities will also be renewed, and street areas improved.

"The key starting points for the design were accessibility and functionality for users, lifecycle sustainability, and high architectural quality. Due to the densely built above-ground and underground environment, the complexity of both the design and construction is high. The designers have found excellent solutions to both architectural and technical challenges," said Tuomo Salonpää, Project Director at the City of Helsinki.

"Working on a compact plot in a central location requires special expertise and good collaboration between the project's different parties. In 2023, the project's implementation planning progressed well, and preparatory works such as utility relocations were carried out on the plot. Cooperation with the various parties has gone very smoothly," said Jukka Viinamäki, Head of Project at YIT.

"Sustainability is at the core of YIT's strategy, and it requires us to act in terms of environmental, social, and governance aspects. In this project, occupational safety plays a central role, and in terms of environmental factors, I would also highlight scheduling control during construction, effective sorting of construction waste, and the use of renewable energy. Smooth execution management is a prerequisite for successfully completing a demanding project," Viinamäki added.

Health and well-being services under one roof

The new building will house the services of 3–4 health stations and is designed to serve 140,000 residents. The building will mainly include social and health care services for adults: general health station services with a separate infectious diseases clinic, psychiatric and substance abuse services, social work for youth and adults, as well as physiotherapy and occupational therapy services.
