We are carrying out a comprehensive renovation of the oldest school in Tampere that is still in operation, updating the facilities to meet modern requirements while respecting the building’s cultural and historical values. Construction work began in June 2025, and the renovated premises will be taken into use in August 2027.

Aleksanteri School consists of three school buildings constructed in different historical periods. The project is exceptionally demanding, as both the buildings and the courtyard are protected, and extensive repair works are being carried out on their structures. Accessibility and safety of the facilities will also be improved. Architecturally and historically significant parts of the school include the dining hall designed by Brynolf Sjöström in 1875, the wooden building designed by F. C. Calonius in 1886, and the stone building designed by Wivi Lönn in 1904.

Collaborative project model

The project is delivered as a collaborative project management contract with a target and ceiling price, with us acting as the project management contractor and principal contractor.

The collaborative project model enables open, solution-oriented and transparent cooperation between all parties involved. We design and implement the project together with our client, Tampere Tilapalveluiden, the design team and the end users. Key benefits of the collaborative model include shared risk management and optimisation of the overall project.

A long service life and responsibility are key objectives of the project. Particular attention is paid to indoor air quality, energy efficiency, material choices, building physics and the respectful renovation of protected structures. Safety, quality and sustainability are at the core of the project to ensure that this historically valuable school complex serves future generations for decades to come.

The estimated cost of the project management contract is approximately EUR 24 million.

The school buildings accommodate grades 1–6 as well as early childhood pre-primary education groups, serving a total of approximately 550 pupils.
