Renovation of the Tampere City Central Office Building

The historically valuable Central Office Building is being renovated to serve the needs of today.

The Central Office Building in Tampere is being renovated and expanded to better serve both the city’s employees and residents. The project is located in the heart of Tampere, at the corner of Aleksis Kiven katu and Puutarhakatu.

We are carrying out the project together with Tampere Tilapalvelut as a cooperative project management contract, commissioned by Tampereen Virastotalo KKOy, a company owned by the City of Tampere. Construction work began in spring 2023, and completion is scheduled for summer 2026.

The total area of the building is approximately 18,200 gross square metres, of which 13,300 square metres will be renovated and 4,900 square metres will be new construction. The total value of the project is around 48 million euros.

The Central Office Building, designed by architect Aarne Ervi, was completed in two phases, in 1967 and 1975. The building is protected under the city plan, and its architectural and cultural-historical value is significant. The renovation and extension are being carried out with respect for the building’s original architecture and historical character.

The low section on the Puutarhakatu side will be demolished, and a new five-storey extension will be built in its place, while the southern and northern sections on the Aleksis Kiven katu side will be renovated.

Once completed, the office building will accommodate around 900 employees. The ground floor will be opened for public use and will feature a service point, a restaurant, and exhibition spaces. The ground floor will also provide access to a second-floor conference and training centre, while the council hall will remain on the fifth floor.

We are building healthy, safe, and adaptable spaces to meet a variety of future needs. Special attention is given to energy efficiency and low-carbon solutions.

Our goal is to achieve RTS environmental certification, and renewable energy solutions such as solar power and district cooling will be utilised. The building is equipped with highly energy-efficient systems and devices, and the design places strong emphasis on accessibility and user experience.

The building’s council hall and several artworks, including Orvokkimeri (1967) by Birger Kaipiainen, will be preserved and protected during construction. Once completed, the renewed Central Office Building will form an important part of Tampere’s city centre office complex – a structure that unites history and the present day in a responsible and modern way.
