YIT Finland
YIT constructed a technically demanding heat and cooling plant, also known as waste heat plant, for Oulun Energia in Oulu's Linnanmaa district.
We delivered a heat and cooling energy production facility for Oulun Energia in the Linnanmaa district of Oulu. The plant serves a nearby industrial facility, and the utilisation of waste heat supports the area's energy-efficient operations. Covering approximately 1,800 square metres, the project was completed in September 2024.
A distinctive feature of the project was an approximately 600 m³ sprinkler water reservoir, which also functions as a thermal storage unit for the cooling system of the neighbouring industrial facility. The watertightness of the reservoir structures was one of the project's most critical requirements and demanded meticulous planning and execution.
Several specialised solutions were implemented during construction. All structures of the sprinkler water reservoir were cast using watertight concrete. The tightness of penetrations was ensured through specially designed penetration details, grouting concrete pours and injection treatments. In addition, the reservoir walls and roof were coated. These solutions enable the reservoir to operate safely both as a sprinkler water storage facility and as part of the industrial facility's cooling system.
The demanding building services engineering requirements were carefully considered throughout the project. Fourteen condensers were installed on the roof, supported by a steel secondary structure built across the entire roof area. A large number of pipe and cable penetrations were also incorporated into the roof structure. Particular attention was paid to protecting the roof during the installation of building services systems, and the watertightness of the structures was thoroughly ensured.
The completed facility generates approximately four per cent of Oulun Energia's district heating demand. The project is an example of demanding energy infrastructure construction, combining technically sophisticated solutions, high quality requirements and a functionally critical end use.
