Melkinlaituri elementary school and daycare centre, Helsinki

We are building a school and daycare facility in Helsinki's Jätkäsaari district using the lifecycle model.

We are constructing the Melkinlaituri elementary school and daycare centre for the City of Helsinki under the lifecycle model. We are responsible for the project's design, implementation, and a 20-year service period, which also includes responsibility for optimizing the buildings’ energy consumption.

The property’s total area is approximately 8,200 gross square meters. The facilities will serve 550 pupils in primary and pre-school education, as well as 250 children in daycare. Pedagogically versatile spaces will support a range of activities and provide a high-quality environment for learners to grow and develop.

Construction began in early 2025, and the school premises are scheduled for completion in late spring 2027.

The spaces intended for versatile use are designed to be adaptable and flexible in terms of size and spatial characteristics, so that they can be adjusted in line with changes in the pupils’ age structure and needs.

Durable and future-proof facilities with sustainability in mind

The goal is to keep the building’s and site’s lifecycle carbon footprint as low as possible. The project utilizes recycled hollow-core slabs and low-carbon concrete. About 350 square meters of the ground floor’s hollow-core slabs are reused. The elements have undergone thorough inspection and refurbishment. The concrete elements were checked and refurbished at Consolis Parma’s Nummela factory before installation.

The aim is a material- and energy-efficient, zero-emission construction site powered by renewable energy sources.

The project aims for a four-star rating in the RTS classification. The property will be equipped with a solar power system that will cover at least 30% of the electricity required for lighting and building operations.
