Arte block, Helsinki

We delivered hundreds of new YIT homes, a garden-like shared courtyard, and a parking garage in the Arabianranta district of Helsinki.

The Arte block has been completed in Helsinki’s Arabianranta, an area of significant cultural and historical value. The development consists of four housing companies with a total of approximately 270 apartments of various sizes and nine commercial spaces. Construction began in 2019 after an office building from the 1980s located on the site was demolished in accordance with circular economy principles.

Our Infra segment was responsible for the site’s preliminary construction, including sheet piling and piling works for the block, as well as post-tensioning of the courtyard deck and yard construction. The Arte block was completed in autumn 2023.

A constrained site set special requirements

The Arte block is located on a tight plot in a logistically demanding environment, which meant that efficient use of space and consideration for the surrounding neighborhood were emphasized throughout all phases of the project. From a risk management perspective, construction was made more challenging by the parking garage located beneath the courtyard deck, as building work continued above the access route even after the garage was put into use. Safety, communication, and traffic arrangements were key factors in the project’s success.

Art and community

A distinctive visual identity and area brand were created for the Arte block by YIT’s in-house marketing team. The art placed in the area was developed in collaboration with well-known artists. Each building features a unique artwork executed in graphic concrete, celebrating the history of glass and ceramic art at the Arabia factory. The housing companies are named after renowned artists: Gunnel, Rut, Kaj, and Birger.

At the center of the residential buildings lies a garden-like shared courtyard. Parking spaces are located beneath the courtyard deck, and residents of the upper floors have access to sauna facilities and shared club rooms. Well-designed and bright apartment layouts provide high-quality living for families of all sizes.
