Leadership, competence and team spirit at the heart of the Hitachi Energy Park project

Vikby's large-scale industrial construction project relies on cooperation and strong professionalism. The scope and technical complexity of the project have set strict requirements for YIT's project management and organization.

The Hitachi Energy Park production and technology centre in Vikby, Mustasaari, is a large entity, the implementation of which requires exceptional expertise, design guidance and smooth cooperation between different parties. "At the heart of such a large project is the ability to lead. Planning is progressing and many different choices are made in parallel with construction. In the project management contract model, we carry out procurement tenders and the customer has the opportunity to participate in decision-making, "says YIT's Project Director Jaakko Linnolahti.

So far, the challenges have been solved nicely together with all stakeholders.

”The project is not easy, only its size class and, above all, the schedule and total lead time makes this challenging. YIT is the largest builder in Finland. We thought that by choosing YIT, we would get the best and most extensive resources in Finland for this project,” said Jussi Paananen, Project Director at Hitachi Energy.

”YIT has brought strong project management and the ability to respond to different resource needs to this project, that is, it has been able to increase resources whenever there has been a need along the way. That way, things have often been solved very smoothly,” Paananen adds.

Technical know-how plays a key role

The project requires especially technical expertise, as it has a lot of demanding areas, such as large structures, demanding floors, as well as demanding large lifts and their coordination with other work. A large geothermal solution, a very demanding building technology section, and waste heat recovered from the production process, for which complex systems have been made, have required a lot of know-how capabilities. The largest rooftop solar power plant in Ostrobothnia was built on the roof of the building.

"The project doubles our transformer production capacity in Finland, brings large transformers into the product range and strengthens our ability to accelerate the green energy transition and support security of supply. We can combine all our business units under the same roof, which brings a lot of efficiency to our operations,” says Paananen.

As a whole, the project is characterized by a good team spirit and cooperation between different parties.

”This applies to many different parties. The cooperation between Hitachi Energy and us has been excellent from the start. We want to bring the project to the end with a similar spirit,” Linnolahti says.

”Cooperation with YIT has gone really well. Collaboration and open dialogue have played a key role in the success of the project,” Paananen sums up.

Facts of the Hitachi Energy Park:

  • The scope of the project is approximately 40,000 square meters, including a transformer factory and new office and testing facilities for the company's electrification, automation, software and service project professionals.
  • When Hitachi Energy Park is completed, nearly 600 people will work on the premises.
  • More than 90% of the production of this production and technology center is exported around the world.
