Kalasatama is located in the Sörnäinen district, on both sides of Kulosaari Bridge. The area was previously a harbour and industrial zone. The shore area has been expanded over the decades, and the islands in the area, such as Kyläsaari, Iso and Pieni Verkkosaari, Sompasaari and Hanasaari have thus grown together.
Now Kalasatama is being developed into a modern city area of the future with urban courtyards, high-rise living and the diverse shopping centre that is currently under construction. The ground floors of the residential buildings in Kalasatama will include plenty of commercial premises, suitable for restaurants and cafés. The next-generation residential area will be shaped during the course of the coming years. The area will have approximately 25,000 residents by the 2030s.
