The Crown Bridges project is one way for the City of Helsinki to prepare itself for the population growth and increased traffic. In addition to the tramway, the project involves the construction of five new bridges.

The Crown Bridges project builds much more than bridges and tramways. The project creates a new urban structure and prepares Helsinki for the increase in the population.

The new Kruunuvuori Bridge connecting Korkeasaari and Kruunuvuorenranta is to become the longest, tallest and longest-standing bridge in Finland - and it is also globally exceptional as bridges of this size have not been built for the sole use of public transport, pedestrian traffic and cycling. The bridge thus becomes an interesting attraction not only due to its size, but also due to the advanced traffic thinking behind its design.

To be completed this year, the Atlantinsilta bridge will connect the new neighbourhoods in Jätkäsaari with the West Terminal and make traffic smoother. The bridge will also have a tramway, which will shorten the travel time to Helsinki city centre.

What happens on a construction site before a building starts to make its way up from the ground? Foundation engineering is the often-overlooked cornerstone of all construction – without it, our buildings would tumble to the ground.

Internal connections in Helsinki will improve in a sustainable way in the 2020s. One of the major urban development projects is Crown Bridges, which will connect the city centre of Helsinki with Laajasalo’s Kruunuvuorenranta and Yliskylä. The maritime route via Korkeasaari will be built for public transport, cyclists and pedestrians.

The built environment should be designed to facilitate smooth everyday living and smooth travel between different areas. Construction companies can make a major contribution to a sustainable society by developing projects in areas that have good transport links and that can be improved through renovation and infill development.
