Leppävaara center dictrict development

The City of Espoo selected the proposal Walk Around by YIT, the architectural firm Arco and the planning and consulting firm Ramboll as the winner of the Leppävaara ideas competition. The aim of the plan was to find a high-quality and economically feasible overall vision for the area north of the railway line in terms of functionality, urban structure and architecture, which would guide the area's urban planning and implementation in stages over the next 10–20 years.

Objectives

The starting point of the competition proposal is to combine the urban structures of North and South Leppävaara into one urban and functional entity. The goal is to create a diverse, multi-functional city center area north of Leppävaara station, which includes various services, housing, workplaces, events and recreational opportunities.

The planning area is approximately 18.6 hectares in size and the goal of the plan amendment is to enable a total of approximately 150,000 square meters of building rights for the area. Of this, approximately 80,000–100,000 square meters would be residential, which would mean approximately 2,000 residents.

Vision

The competition proposal is a forward-looking urban and functional vision for the overall plan for the city centre of Leppävaara. The aim is to create a distinctive, experiential and easily accessible city centre area with a strong identity, supported by public transport, walking and cycling, where a vibrant public space forms a living room that supports community for the area's residents and operators.

The comfortable and varied-sized housing blocks create an enriching spatial experience and meet the diverse housing needs of the area. The starting point for the design of the blocks is sustainable housing that takes into account the well-being of the environment, people and the community.
