Jätkäsaari Swimming and Sports Centre

A new, versatile swimming and sports centre will be built in Jätkäsaari, providing a significant addition to Helsinki’s sports and recreation services. YIT is delivering the Jätkäsaari Swimming and Sports Centre for the City of Helsinki under a collaborative project management contract. Once completed, the facility will serve local residents, schools, and sports enthusiasts from a wide range of disciplines, particularly in western and southern Helsinki.

Construction work will begin in September 2026, and the sports centre is scheduled to be completed at the turn of 2029 and 2030. On this page, we will provide updates on the project's progress, key construction phases, and the effects of the works on the surrounding area.

The new sports centre will offer extensive, modern, and accessible facilities for more than twenty different sports and recreational activities, including:

Aquatic Facilities:

• An eight-lane 50-metre swimming pool, a depth-adjustable teaching pool, a diving pool, a paddling pool and children's pool, a water slide, a therapy and multipurpose pool, a cold-water pool, and a whirlpool.

Indoor Sports Facilities:

• Including ball game halls, group exercise studios, a skills and motor skills hall, a gym, dance and yoga studios, a functional training area, a bouldering area, and boxing and martial arts facilities. In total, the centre will provide more than a dozen different exercise and training spaces.

Outdoor Sports Facilities:

• The roof of the swimming hall is preliminarily planned to include, among other features, a running track for warm-up activities and outdoor fitness equipment.

Changing and Shower Facilities:

• Several accessible changing and washing facilities will be available, including a changing area designed to provide greater privacy, with individual changing and shower cubicles. Visitors will have access from the pool area to shared saunas and their associated shower facilities. In addition, conventional men's and women's saunas and washing facilities will be provided.

The building has been designed to achieve a high level of energy efficiency, while low-carbon solutions have also been incorporated throughout the project. For example, heat recovered from the exhaust air of the pool areas will be used for heating, and part of the building’s electricity demand will be covered by an on-site solar power system. Low-carbon concrete and other low-carbon construction materials will be used wherever possible.

Information about the project's progress and its impacts will be communicated on a regular basis. The aim is to maintain open and proactive communication that helps local residents and stakeholders prepare for the different phases of the construction work.

Once completed, the Jätkäsaari Swimming and Sports Centre will form a significant sports and leisure destination, supporting the attractiveness of the area and the wellbeing of its residents for decades to come.
