START OF WORKS ON THE ESPLANADI WATER SUPPLY TUNNEL

YIT Infra will carry out the construction of the Esplanadi water supply tunnel for the Helsinki Region Environmental Services Authority (HSY).

The Esplanadi water supply tunnel is located in the districts of Kaartinkaupunki (Gardesstaden) and Kamppi (Kampen). The tunnel runs between Esplanadi Park and the Munkkisaari–Mäntymäki water supply tunnel.

Construction works will take place between 2025 and 2027. The tunneling will begin with excavation in September–October 2025. Before excavation starts or before works move close to properties, inspections will be conducted in the buildings within the impact area. These inspections will be carried out by Kalliotekniikka Consulting Engineers Oy. In addition, various environmental monitoring activities will be conducted in the project’s impact area, such as vibration measurements, monitoring of groundwater level and quality, and settlement measurements.

In the immediate vicinity of the worksite and within the yellow-marked area, people may experience blasting vibrations transmitted through the bedrock. The closer to the worksite, the stronger the vibrations may be felt compared to the outer edges of the area.

Noise-generating works in the tunnel are carried out in accordance with the decision of the City of Helsinki (HEL 2025-002462), based on HSY’s noise notification. Noise-causing works will begin on 22 September with rock reinforcement.

The following working hours will apply on site: Drilling and mechanical scaling in the tunnel Monday–Friday, 07:00–18:00. If the noise level in nearby residential and accommodation rooms does not exceed 35 dB, work may also continue in the evenings between 18:00–21:00 and on Saturdays between 09:00–18:00. Blasting, mucking, and transport of rock Monday–Friday, 07:00–21:00 and Saturdays, 09:00–18:00.
