In 1937-40 constructed Salmisaari Building was originally the head office, factory and main warehouse of Oy Alkoholiliike Ab. Nowadays the building is known as Helsinki Court House, which houses e.g. Helsinki District Court, Office of the Prosecutor General and state legal aid office.
The renovation of Salmisaari Building was the largest refurbishment project of its time: altogether 47 000 m² was renovated. The main contractor of this challenging construction work was YIT Construction Ltd and Arkkitehtitoimisto Tuomo Siitonen Oy was responsible of the architectural design.
Salmisaari Court House won the award of the Concrete Structure of the Year 2004 for skilled architectural and structural design, in which the high quality and the life cycle durable use of concrete together with expert realisation have created an elegant and vivid entity.
